…interrogators had used threats and acts of anal rape to induce confessions and had forced juveniles to fellate them during interrogations.
The above is a quote from a confidential State Department cable released by WikiLeaks. The leaked document outlines the outcome of an inspection of a detention facility by US and Iraqi officials, referred to in the cable only as “Site 4″, in Iraq.
The inspection found that more than 1,400 detainees were held in the facility in what the inspectors called “squalid, cramped conditions“. Many detainees were found to have been detained illegally, including 37 illegally held juveniles.
Prisoners displayed signs of torture, including bruising, broken bones and lash marks. Many reported to have been hung by handcuffs from a hook in the ceiling, hoisted with a chain-and-pulley system ordinarily used for lifting vehicles, and beaten on the soles of their feet and their buttocks. Floor underneath the pulley was, according to the document, stained with bloodspots. The documents further states that anal rape and sexual abuse, primarily of teenagers were widespread.
Discovery of the apparent abuse did not lead to criminal investigations of the perpetrators. To the contrary, much of the mistreatment was permitted to continue.
The prison was “well over acceptable capacity“, leaving detainees with insufficient space to lie down, poor air circulation, overflowing toilets, and sewage spills into cellblocks. Due to such unsanitary conditions and limited water supply, the detainees suffered “from lice, scabies, and infections“.
Iraqi Ministry of Interior justified the abuses with the “few bad apples” excuse and maintained that only three interrogators abused their prisoners. The Ambassador who wrote the cable dismissed these claims as absurd and made strict recommendations to release illegally held detainees and initiate criminal investigations against all suspected abusers.
Ministry of Interior then issued 50 arrest warrants, but still only executed three of them. Thus far. No trials were held for the suspects.
This is not the first WikiLeaks cable that exposed prisoner torture and rape by US and US puppet groups. Details are now known of torture at Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and Bagram, as well as the rendition sites detainees were sent to. Yet we still can only guess the full extent of the abuse.
